Selected Student Profiles Fall 2024

Denis Borisov earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Mathematics and Physics, with a major in Theoretical Physics and minors in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). Alongside his studies at Baruch, he is completing a Master’s Degree in Finance from the New Economic School and pursuing the Data Science program at the Yandex School of Data Analysis. At MIPT, Denis made his mark as the top student by GPA, earning multiple academic scholarships. His achievements include being a prize-winner in the Russian CFA International Research Challenge, securing a gold medal in the Russian School Olympiads in physics, and placing as a top contender in the Russian and Saint Petersburg School Olympiads in physics, mathematics, and economics.

Edgar Gonzalez-Gascou earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Communication Systems from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, where he received an Exchange Year Program Scholarship for Carnegie Mellon University. Before joining the Baruch MFE Program, he interned as a Software Engineer at Virtual Traffic Lights, working on reinforcement learning models to optimize traffic flow. Edgar aspires to work as a quantitative researcher or trader in a buy side firm. Outside of academics, he enjoys playing tennis, poker, and traveling.

Why Baruch: I would’ve chosen Baruch over any other option. First of all, it is in NYC, which is the best place for what I want to do. The class size is very small, which I like because I can get to know everyone individually, and the professors get to know us. There is also a very strong alumni network and the tuition is at least half the price of the other competitor programs. Moreover, it is ranked first on the QuantNet and Risk.net rankings.

Fangtong Wang holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the National School of Development at Peking University. While attending Peking University, he earned the China Finance 40 Forum Scholarship, the Award for Community or Public Service, and the Grand Prize in the Challenge Cup Competition for Scientific Achievement. He also published a paper in The Applied Economics Review on the impact of school violence risk on human capital accumulation. Prior to joining Baruch, Fangtong interned as a Quantitative Researcher at AXQ Capital, Shanghai Wenbo Investment Management, and Huatai Securities. During these internships, he focused on mid- to low-frequency alpha research in the Chinese equity market. Fangtong is seeking a role as a quantitative researcher at a hedge fund or proprietary trading firm. In his free time, he enjoys reading (novels and social sciences) and traveling.

Why Baruch: After speaking with Baruch MFE alumni, I was impressed by the career services, strong alumni community, and student placements. I decided to apply exclusively to this program, without applying to any others.

Huihan Yang holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science and Big Data Technology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, graduating with first-class honors. She was recognized with the Presidential Award for Outstanding Graduates and received the Tier One and Keenstar scholarships. Before joining the Baruch MFE Program, Huihan gained experience as a Quantitative Research Intern at Aristeia AI, the Beijing Zhuoshi Fund, Derivatives China Capital, and Shenzhen Qianhai Firstthink Technology. Her internships involved high-frequency strategy generation, factor construction, and various machine learning techniques. Huihan aims to become a quantitative researcher at a hedge fund or proprietary trading firm. In her spare time, she enjoys photography and watching musicals.

Junhao Yu holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Physics from Tsinghua University and earned the First-Class Award for Academic Excellence. Before enrolling in the Baruch MFE Program, Junhao held several internships. As a deep learning researcher at Haier, he utilized XGBoost, neural networks, and LSTM models to improve predictive accuracy. As a quantitative researcher at AxiomQuant Investment Management and WeQuant, he developed features and models across various frequency spectra that entered production. Junhao aspires to work as a quantitative researcher or trader at a high-frequency hedge fund. In his free time, he enjoys playing basketball, billiards, and Texas Hold’em poker.

Why Baruch: I found Baruch College boasts a well-structured and outstanding career service, an extensive alumni network, and an advantageous geographical location, all of which greatly align with my academic and career aspirations. In proximity to Wall Street, studying at Baruch will provide me with ample opportunities to learn from alumni with abundant industry experience from Wall Street and gain insights into the market. I discovered that Baruch offers a well-structured yet flexible curriculum, which perfectly suits my non-financial academic background. It not only equips me with encyclopedic financial knowledge but encourages me to select courses tailored to my career choices. Its emphasis on quantitative analysis, particularly courses such as algorithmic trading and portfolio construction, strikes the perfect balance between my interests in mathematics, computer science, and finance.

Shuhao Liu holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from the Talent Program at Fudan University, graduating with honors. He was recognized as the Merit Graduate of the Province and received the National Scholarship. Additionally, he won the Chinese Undergraduate Mathematics Competition, the Shing-Tung Yau College Student Mathematics Contest, and the Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling. Prior to joining Baruch, Shuhao interned as a Quantitative Researcher at AXQ Capital, where he developed minute-frequency alphas for Chinese and U.S. equities. He also interned at Huawen Futures Brokerage Co., focusing on overnight ETF options strategies. Shuhao aims to land a role as a quantitative researcher at a hedge fund, with the ultimate goal of becoming a portfolio manager. Outside of work, he is a technology enthusiast and enjoys music and working out.

Taijun Piao holds Bachelor’s Degrees in Physics and Economics from Peking University, graduating with honors. He was a Merit Student and Chinese Physics Olympiad silver medalist, and received the Mercedes-Benz and Second Prize scholarships. Before joining the Baruch MFE Program, Taijun interned as a Quantitative Researcher at Jump Trading, Shanghai Yanfu Investments Co., and ToTQuant. He aspires to work as a quantitative researcher at a hedge fund or high-frequency proprietary trading firm. In his free time, Taijun enjoys playing basketball, Texas Hold’em poker, and reading history books.

Yishu Dai holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from Tsinghua University and a Master’s Degree in Architecture from the Technical University of Munich. In 2015, she was a Chinese Physics Olympiad gold medalist. Before joining the Baruch MFE Program, Yishu worked as an artificial intelligence intern at Assenagon Asset Management, focusing on LLM research for financial applications. She also interned as a quantitative researcher at Tenbagger Capital Management, where she conducted mid- to low-frequency equity alpha research. Yishu is passionate about pursuing a role as a quantitative researcher at a hedge fund. In her free time, she enjoys playing table tennis, badminton, and hiking.

Yuxuan Wang holds two Bachelor’s Degrees from Tsinghua University’s a B.S. in Mathematics and Physics and a B.E. in Materials Science and Engineering’s where he earned the National Scholarship and was recognized as a Beijing Outstanding Graduate. Before joining the Baruch MFE Program, Yuxuan worked as a Quantitative Research Intern at ToT Quant, developing intraday futures trading strategies. He also interned at Chengqi Funds, focusing on mid- to low-frequency equity alphas for market-neutral investment. In his future career, Yuxuan aims to work in a research capacity that is closely linked with trading. In his spare time, he enjoys long-distance running, soccer (supports Barcelona), and Formula One (supports Ferrari).
