"How fast is our longevity extending? : A comparative investigation using three longevity indicators"
Abstract: Substantial improvement of old-age survival started in high-income countries around 1970 and is still in progress. In this study, we investigated the longevity extension in G-7 countries since 1970 with focus on the following questions: How fast has our longevity been extending? Are there substantial differences in the pace of extension among high-income countries? Has the longevity extension been accelerating, decelerating, or continuing at a stable pace? Has the age pattern of old-age survival been changing? We used three longevity indicators (conditional life expectancy, modal length of life, and age of equivalent mortality), which are based on three different demographic definitions of “old age”. Moderate but systematic differences in the results were observed among the three indicators, and mathematical reasons for the differential trends were found. The results suggest that the age of equivalent mortality is a useful new tool for longevity analysis.
Pre-Seminar: We will meet at 12:30pm to have lunch with the speaker.
Talk will being at 1:00pm
Post-Seminar: CIDR fellows and Demography Certificate students are strongly encouraged to meet
with the speaker after the seminar to discuss his work further and consult about graduate school, research, job
