COVID-19 in Latin America: Challenges and Prospects

As of July 1st, four of the twelve countries with the highest number of COVID-19 cases per capita were located in Latin America. These include Chile which had 14000 cases per million compared to the US which, with a much larger population, comes in fourth globally with 8200 cases per million. Peru, Panama, and Brazil also appear in the top twelve globally. Outside of the United States, Latin America is the area of the world that faces the most extensive challenges from COVID-19. Some of the contributing factors to the region's issues with COVID-19 may be attributed to the region's high rate of urbanization and housing density, intense inequality, and lack of a social safety net to provide health care and income to citizens in these difficult times. As in North American and Europe, some government responses have exacerbated countries' experiences with COVID-19. This panel will explore the scope of the COVID-19 epidemic in Latin America, its impacts on the people, and government responses to the disease.
