One of a series of films and artist conversations, Once Upon a Time Proletarian was written and directed by 2020 Sidney Harman Writer-In-Residence, Xiaolu Guo.
Xiaolu Guo is an award-winning Chinese-British novelist, memoirist and film-maker, who explores alienation, memory, personal and physical journeys, feminism, translation and transnational identities. She is the author of Nine Continents: A Memoir In and Out of China, recipient of the 2017 National Book Critics Circle Award.

A subjective anatomy of contemporary China in the post Marxist era. With a dark, poetic point-of-view, this film depicts people from different classes living in modern Chinese society, contemplating a vast and complex society whose citizens are searching for new beliefs and identities after the country’s great revolutionary days.
