New Student Programs
Welcome New Students!
The Office of New Student Programs exists to help new students experience a seamless transition to Baruch College. NSP provides first-year and transfer students with an opportunity to develop the tools necessary to acclimate and succeed in college. As such, the First-Year Seminar and Transfer Student Network are especially designed to expose new students to study skills, time management, community engagement, leadership, and access to on- and off-campus resources.
The First Year Seminar is a mandatory course for all incoming first-year students. The class meets once a week for 75 minutes and for the first 11 weeks of the semester. The seminar is specifically designed to:
- Establish a meaningful relationship between the instructor, peer mentor, and students
- Help to create a roadmap to meet students’ academic, personal, and professional goals
- Provide clear expectations for academic achievement and acceptable behavior in college
- Create a safe space in which students can share their concerns
- Engage and connect students with the Baruch community and its full array of resources
A peer mentor is selected and trained to co-lead a section of the seminar alongside an instructor; the peer mentor serves as a role model to students taking the course.
The Transfer Student Network allows transfer students to further get involved on campus by giving them a network of students to connect with. Transfer students in the program are paired with a student mentor to expose them to the different resources on campus, as well as opportunities for campus involvement.
