Professor Beeman’s research examines the intersections of race, class, and gender, and how changing expressions of racism affect interracial organizing, progressive politics, and workplace equity. Her book “Liberal White Supremacy: How Progressives Silence Racial and Class Oppression” evaluates differences between liberal and radical organizing and develops a theoretical conceptualization of color-blind ideology that builds on previous scholarship to illustrate how macro-level racial ideologies produce racism-evasive organizational outcomes. Professor Beeman's research has appeared in the Harvard Business Review (HBR), Forbes Magazine, The Wire, Sociological Forum, Social Science Quarterly, the Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, Violence Against Women and as chapters in edited volumes. She has been quoted in Nature, Forbes, Huffington Post, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, Galveston Daily News, WalletHub, and College Magazine. She has also written for Harvard Business Review (online and print journal), Counterpunch Magazine, and Racism Review. Her research on what she has called “emotional segregation” received an award from the American Sociological Association (ASA) and was published as the lead article in Ethnic and Racial Studies. This work was noted in the 2018 Presidential Address for the American Sociological Association. Professor Beeman plans to write a second book on this concept, which she argues is not only manifest in micro-level interactions but is coded into institutional practices and decisions that negatively impact multiply positioned people of color.

Professor Beeman has shared her work with multiple audiences and is frequently invited by organizations to speak on the issues of racism, social justice, and cultivating inclusiveness in the workplace. She has appeared on CSPAN’s Washington Journal, Connecticut Public Television, Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park in South Carolina, and was a featured speaker for the Diversity and Inclusion Research Conference (DIRC 2020). She regularly facilitates discussions and consults with multiple audiences in higher education, non-profit, and community organizations. She has given talks and led workshops for organizations such as The American Meteorological Society’s Early Leadership Training Academy, NASA, Spokane Community Against Racism (SCAR), The Network of Executive Women (NEW), The Association of Junior Leagues International, The Center for Brooklyn History, Spokane Community Against Racism (SCAR), The Cooper Union, Purdue University, The Strand Bookstore, Chinatown Soup, NeueHouse, and Peace and Justice Action League. She is deeply committed to teaching difficult topics and speaking openly with students of all ages about inequity. She has presented on the history of racism for high school students in her community and for Baruch’s Bring Your Child to Work program. She has won three teaching awards, including the Whiting Fellowship, which granted her a partial sabbatical to continue her research on racism and social movements.

Professor Beeman received her Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. Her dissertation entitled, “Grassroots Organizing and ‘Post-Civil Rights’ Racism: The Dilemma of Negotiating Interracial Solidarity in a Color-Blind Society” received a dissertation grant from the Society for the Study of Social Problems, an award that recognizes scholars who advance social problem solutions and scholar activism. In 2024, she won the SSSP Doris Wilkinson Faculty Leadership Award for promoting public understanding of social justice issues and courses of action to effect change.

This article analyzes current popular writings on the"gig" economy and how it has been packaged for privileged readers. As more college-educated, middle class, or formerly middle class people have difficulty landing secure jobs, they are forced to look for "gigs" but this is really no different than the kind of odd jobs or contingent labor poor and working class people have always had to do. In my analysis I engage studies and commentary by economists and sociologists, such as Kathryn Edin and Laura Lein.

Fellowship LeaveWeissman School of Arts and Sciences2018The purpose of my fellowship leave was to work on a book manuscript analyzing the impact of liberal, color-blind ideology on progressive movements and the complexities of diversity, equity, inclusion, and allyship. I was interested in how progressive organizations addressed both class exploitation and racism simultaneously, as well as how progressives could become better allies. This book was based on my ethnographic study of a progressive, interracial organization and its corresponding coalition. The fellowship allowed me time to collect new data, build my conceptual model, write chapters, and prepare a book proposal for the University of Georgia Press.
