Cheryl C. Smith is Interim Associate Dean of the Weissman School of Arts & Sciences and Professor of English at Baruch College. As Associate Dean, Dr. Smith oversees curriculum and instruction, academic affairs, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She chairs the Committee on Academic Standing and serves on the Weissman Curriculum Committee, the Dean’s Advisory Council, the CUNY Faculty Affairs Advisory Board, the Committee for Coordinated Undergraduate Education, and the Joint Academic Standing Committee.

Since 2011, Dr. Smith has been co-editor of the Journal of Basic Writing (JBW), launched in the 1970s in response to educational changes and turmoil surrounding the implementation of open admissions at CUNY. Her tenure with JBW inspired her current book project, Poetic Justice: Poetry, Protest, and Democracy in Public Higher Education. The book looks at the value of poetry in the classroom, connecting it to the advancement of expression, social liberation, and democracy in two periods of civic struggle that implicated educational opportunity and equity: the late 1960s and today. In 2021, Dr. Smith was named a Faculty Fellow in Transformative Learning in the Humanities, and has won grants for undergraduate research in the classroom and the public humanities. During her time at Baruch, she has held the titles of Dean’s Fellow for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Co-Chair of the Self Study for Re-Accreditation; Faculty Liaison to the Center for Teaching and Learning; Faculty Director of the Honors Program; and Director of the Great Works of World Literature Program. Her teaching interests include creative non-fiction writing, first-year writing, literature and the visual arts, world literature, and American literature.
