Elena M. Martínez is Professor of Spanish and Latin American Literature in the Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature. In addition, she is affiliated to the Department of Black and Latinxs Studies at Baruch College. Since 2005 Martinez has been on the faculty of  the Latin American, Iberian and Latino Studies  program at the Graduate Center, CUNY. She completed her B.A. at the University of Puerto Rico and her M.A. and Ph.D. from New York University.

Martínez is a specialist in Latin American and Caribbean literatures, with particular focus on women and gay literature. She has co-edited two volumes and published three books, numerous articles, book chapters and reviews. Her book Lesbian Voices from Latin America (originally published by Garland, 1996) was reprinted by Routledge in 2016. She has co-edited with Francisco Soto the books Entre islas: la imaginación poética de Magaly Alabau, Alina Galliano, Lourdes Gil, Maya Islas, and Iraida Iturralde (2018), and Identidad y diáspora: el teatro de Pedro Monge Rafuls (2014). Her articles and book reviews have been published in journals such as Michigan Quarterly, Revista Iberoamericana, Confluencia: Revista Hispánica de Cultura y Literatura, Cuadernos de Literatura del Caribe e Hispanoamérica de Universidad de Cartagena, Chasqui. Revista de Literatura Latinoamericana, and Insula. Revista de Ciencias y Letras Humanas, among others.

Elena Martínez has served on the editorial board of Chasqui: Revista de Literatura Latinoamericana since 1996. At Baruch College, she served as Department Chair of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature from 2001 to 2015; she also has directed the Paul André Feit lectures on Latin American and Caribbean Cultures since 2008.
