My work at Baruch is guided by: 1) the importance of undergraduate research engagement in propelling their intellectual development and career trajectories, 2) the central role of mindful and connected communication to enhance the well-being of our community, 3) the critical responsibility of the academy in preparing our students to be innovators in addressing the existential challenge of our time - climate change mitigation and resilience, and the development of knowledge regarding: a) the importance of sleep in restoring objective next day effort and b) how humans respond to climate change and prepare for resiliency.

As Baruch College Ombuds I attempt to help those in our Baruch community who have conflicts with other members of our Baruch community. It is my hope that they feel their challenges and concerns are being heard and treated with respect and dignity. Climate change education at Baruch is critical. The climate crisis presents significant challenges to humanity. We have an obligation to educate our students for critical roles in climate change communication, risk assessment, disaster response, and adaptation to a changing environment. Climate predictions indicated impacts will be felt with greatest intensity by our minority communities. Our students represent many historically disadvantaged and underrepresented groups. In a survey conducted at the College last year, over 90% reported they worry about climate change, over 80% believe it is a threat to their well-being, and over 80% believe they have a responsibility to combat it (Tipaldo & Engle-Friedman, 2020). Under my leadership we created the Baruch Climate Scholars program with funding for the inaugural cohort from the CUNY Office of Research and for the second cohort from the CUNY Office of Workforce Development. This year we are running the first CUNY Climate Scholars Program which includes students and faculty from Baruch, Hunter, Brooklyn, and Bronx Community College students. The program includes twice weekly didactic seminars, three months of research lab experience and a three-month internship in organizations, NGOs, and corporations. All will present their research findings at Baruch's Creative Inquiry Day in May. In addition, our CUNY Climate Scholars have met on Zoom with over 2500 Baruch’s First Year Seminar students and with over 80 middle and high school students in Baruch’s STEP (Science and Technology Entry Program) Academy to discuss local NYC climate impacts, resilience, and careers. An additional program sponsored by Provost Essig’s Innovation Seed grant is our Heat Island Communication and Networking project. Eight low-income minority students are capturing information from the most vulnerable communities in NYC. They are surveying local community organizations including religious institutions, medical facilities, police and fire departments, schools, daycare centers, NGOs and community support services regarding heat island preparation, social networking, and response.  I was proud to be asked to serve as a Team Lead on the Governors Island Climate Hub competition. It’s thrilling to know CUNY is a finalist in this spectacular opportunity.
