Ted A. Henken is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology where he has worked since August 2003. He holds a joint appointment in the Department of Black and Latino Studies, where he served as chair between 2010-2012. He earned his Ph.D. in Latin American Studies in May 2002 from Tulane University’s Roger Thayer Stone Center for Latin American Studies and is a past president of the Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy (ASCE, 2012-2014). A past winner of Baruch's Presidential Excellence Award in Distinguished Teaching (2007), Ted specializes in courses on contemporary Cuban culture and society, introduction to sociology, sociology of the Internet, contemporary Latin America, and comparative race and ethnic relations. During spring 2018, Ted held the Alfonso Reyes Chair as a visiting professor of Latin American Studies at the Institut des Hautes Études de l’Amérique Latine (IHEAL) at the Sorbonne (Paris-3), where he taught two graduate seminars on comparative race and ethnic relations and the rise and fall of the “Pink Tide” in Latin America.

Ted is currently writing a book on Cuba's independent journalism movement tentatively titled, Saturn's Children. Under contract with the University of Florida Press, the book tells the story of the more than 60-year struggle to re-establish a free press in Cuba through the practice of independent (and now digital, transnational) journalism. Ted recently published two scholarly articles related to that project. One (in Spanish) tells the story of the end of Cuba's free press in the early-1960s (ch. 8, "Periodismo," pp. 243-281, https://www.programacuba.com/los-mitos-de-la-revolucion-cubana). The other (in English) recounts the story of a "frustrated rebellion" of sorts that took place in Havana's classrooms and newsrooms during the late-1980s (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/08905762.2022.2129828). Ted has also published numerous interviews with Cuban independent journalists related to this project at Hypermedia Magazine (in Spanish: https://hypermediamagazine.com/seccion/entrevistas/hijos-de-saturno/) and at No Country Magazine (in English: https://nocountrymagazine.com/author/ted-henken/).

Ted has closely followed the impact of increased Internet access in Cuba since the turn of the century. In that vein, he co-edited the book, Cuba’s Digital Revolution: Citizen Innovation and State Policy, with Sara Garcia Santamaria (University of Florida Press, 2021, https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctv1mvw94t). The book is also available in Spanish from Editorial Hypermedia (https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Ted-Henken-ed/dp/1948517965). He has also published numerous articles on the emergent independent digital media landscape on the island, including “The Opiate of the Paquete” (Cuban Studies 50, 2021), “Cuba’s Digital Millennials” (Social Research, 2017), “From Cyberspace to Public Space?” published in The Revolution under Raúl Castro: A Contemporary Cuba Reader (2015), and a 2011 Spanish language article about the polarization of the Cuban “blogosphere” in the journal Nueva Sociedad (https://nuso.org/articulo/una-cartografia-de-la-blogosfera-cubana-entre-oficialistas-y-mercenarios/). Additionally, Ted writes the annual “Freedom on the Net” report on Cuba for Freedom House (https://freedomhouse.org/country/cuba/freedom-net/2022).

Finally, Ted’s research focuses on the social implications of Cuban economic reform and the rise of the private, “self-employed” sector on the island over the last 30 years (1990-2020). He is the co-author with Archibald Ritter of the book, Entrepreneurial Cuba: The Changing Policy Landscape, published in 2015 by Lynne Rienner Publishers. The Spanish edition of this book (Editorial Hypermedia, 2020, https://www.amazon.com/Cuba-empresarial-Emprendedores-cambiante-pol%C3%ADtica/dp/1948517612) features an epilogue covering the 2015-2020 period.
