Vera Haller is a professor of journalism at CUNY's Baruch
College in New York. She is also an active freelance journalist, covering
New York City news as well as foreign immigration stories. Among the
publications she writes for are The Los Angeles Times, The Washington
Post, The New York Times and The Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Before joining the faculty at Baruch, Haller was the editor-in-chief of
amNewYork, a daily newspaper published by the Tribune Company,
where she shaped coverage for more than 300,000 readers. Before
moving to amNewYork, she was editor of NYNewsday.com, Newsday’s
website devoted to New York City news. A founding staff member, she
helped launch the award-winning site after the terrorist attacks of Sept.
11, 2001. At NYNewsday.com, Haller practiced all aspects of online
journalism – from updating the site with breaking news to shooting and
editing video reports to producing large multimedia features.
She began her journalism career at The Associated Press, where she was
a reporter and editor in its New York bureau. During the 1990s, Haller
worked overseas, including four years as a reporter for Reuters in
Rome, where she covered stories about political corruption, the Vatican
and Italian arts and culture. While in Rome, she contributed articles to
The Washington Post on a regular basis.
Moving to Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1998, she established a
freelance career, publishing articles in USA Today, Newsweek, Forbes
International and The International Herald Tribune, among other
publications. She wrote about the AIDS crisis in southern Africa and the
transition to a post-apartheid democracy.

Research Currently in Progess

Haller, V.(n.d.). Community Reporting. In Progress.

Continuing coverage of metropolitan area communities and neighborhood profiles for The Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post.

Haller, V.(n.d.). Immigration reporting. In Progress.

Currently developing a long-term reporting project, hopefully developing into a book. One of the ideas that I am researching is profiling communities in the U.S. and Europe that have welcomed new immigrants and studying how such open policy has affected the local economy and integration of refugees and migrants.
