Research Currently in Progess

Sheehan Saldana, Z.(n.d.). New work. In Progress.

In addition to the work mentioned below I am also continually creating drawings, sculpture, video, and photographs that are not part of any particular series, and am always developing new work. My art is presented on-line at http://www.zoesheehan.com

Sheehan Saldana, Z.(n.d.). Corrugated. In Progress.

In this outgrowth of the 'Ersatz' series, I make corrugated cardboard boxes from paper and glue. My boxes are indistinguishable from their mass-produced brethren. I seal the boxes with handmade gummed paper tape and ship them through the mail. The object is at once the artwork as well as the container and the pedestal.

Sheehan Saldana, Z.(n.d.). Ersatz. In Progress.

Research, creation, and display of functional, handmade duplicates of everyday objects. This work is intended for exhibition in a commercial gallery setting. Objects in the series include life jackets, twine, ketchup, paper towels, matches, bandages, kerchiefs and more. These functional objects embody subjects such as consumerism, security, death, and time. In this, as in past work, I continue to explore questions about how audience(s) encounter the work, particularly in relation to the shifting values of art, concept, and the handmade object.

Sheehan Saldana, Z.(n.d.). Interior Design. In Progress.

Research, creation, and display of artwork featuring handmade milk paint and tufted wool carpeting, along with related accoutrements (paint rollers, dropcloths, drywall screws, wall anchors). The project develops from the art I have realized over the past several years, whereby I make ordinary, functional, and customarily mass-produced objects that typically call into question the nature of art itself and its relationship with craft and consumption. Interior Design occupies the locations typical to art (the wall, the floor) but rather than standing apart from the interior architecture, my work lives as a skin on the structure’s surface. This shift, coupled with the ubiquity of paint and carpet themselves, courts the possibility that the viewer will not recognize the artwork as such. I am crafting sculpture that hides in plain sight.

Sheehan Saldana, Z.(n.d.). Lift. In Progress.

I’ve been making objects that offer buoyancy. While these objects connect thematically to the life jackets I created in Ersatz, they move beyond the threat/security dynamic to suggest respite or even levitation. Objects in the series include an edition of indigo-dyed paper and bamboo kites, and a batik-resist, indigo-dyed gaff rigged sail for a small wooden sailing dinghy. Like all my work this is both personal and political; it is a response to the sinking of art under the surface of its commercialization, and a general leavening agent for the weight of existence.
