Susan Tenneriello (Ph.D. CUNY Graduate Center) is Associate Professor of Theatre in the Fine and Performing Arts Department. She specializes in interdisciplinary studies with particular interest in the intersections of dance, theatre, visual art, and technology. Her work often focuses on spectacle entertainments and strategies of visual display in performance culture. She has published on such subjects as nineteenth-century theatre spectacles, the public dance spectacles of Ruth St. Denis, and the dance images of Edgar Degas. Her articles and performance criticism appear in Dance Chronicle, Performance Research, The Journal of American Drama and Theatre, Women and Performance, Slavic and East European Performance and more. She is the author of Spectacle Culture and American Identity: 1815-1940 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013), a study of the growth of immersive entertainments in U.S. history. Her current book project examines the history and development of the modern Olympic Opening Ceremony from 1896-2016.
