1978 Run for Congress

In 1978 Martin Begun ran for Edward Koch’s seat in Congress. Koch was elected New York City’s 105th Mayor in 1977 leaving a vacant seat.  Endorsed by former Mayors Beame and Wagner and other notable New York civic leaders, Begun believed that “it is imperative that the congressman from this district make every government agency aware that it is there to serve the needs of individuals and institutions, and aware also of the enormous and urgent needs of our city.” He desired to be an advocate for the people and to help his constituents by dealing with matters personally.
